The leaves in Northern Virginia never disappoint in the fall – it’s a real trick to try and determine when they will peak, as clients are frequently looking for colorful fall backgrounds for their portrait sessions. This year, the leaves peaked a bit later than normal, the first weekend in November, and OH MY GOD were they beautiful! Priya + Abhay were a couple of the lucky recipients of all the peak weekend glory, and it resulted in a colorful and romantic engagement session for the two of them. By now, the two of them are on their way to India for their marriage ceremony, which I am sure will be beautiful and special, as they will be surrounded by their closest family and friends. They both live here in the States, so I thought it was so sweet that they wanted to have an engagement portrait session before their wedding to commemorate their lives here as well. I met up with Priya + Abhay at my fave fall location, Silver Lake Park, in Haymarket, Virginia, and we wandered the grounds scouting all of the best spots. It has been a really rainy and gray year, so a lot of us photographers have been dealing with overcast skies and rescheduled shoots, so I was so happy when the weather was forecast to be gorgeous on the day of this session. The light ended up being so beautiful, and it reflected so well of this beautiful couple. Here are some of my favorites from our session!
Our besties are so close to welcoming a baby boy, and we could not be more excited! My husband (Zac) and Kyle go waaaaay back. All the way to elementary school, when they were neighbors and instant best friends. What’s even more funny is that Kaylin + I also go way back…to when she was in elementary school and I used to babysit her! It makes her sound VERY young and me sound VERY old, but really I was like 12 or 13 and she was 7 or 8, so only a few years age difference :).
When Kyle was turning 30, we planned a fun trip to New Orleans to celebrate. He surprised the heck out of Kaylin by proposing to her a few days before we left, at his own surprise birthday party! We were so excited and happy to go and celebrate and we had the BEST time. Thanks to the New Orleans open container laws, we were feeling really good one evening. I remember sitting in the back of an Uber, and we were talking about babies in general, and somehow we got on the subject of their future children and what their names would be. They said they had a name picked out that would work for a boy or a girl and that there was no WAY we could guess it. I guessed Logan and from the look on their faces, I knew I had guessed right! I was sworn to secrecy and actually forgot about the whole exchange (open containers, duh) until now, years later when they finally get pregnant, and are having a sweet baby boy, who will actually get to be named Logan.
I met up with Kyle + Kaylin a few weeks ago to document her cute baby bump and then a week later, we showered her and Logan with a Where the Wild Things Are-themed shower, and so today I am excited to share images from BOTH of these events with you!
A couple of weeks ago, I got to spend some time with one of the sweetest newborn baby girls, and her equally sweet family. Emma was such an old soul. She seemed completely wise, and was such an agreeable little lady. Her mom, Christa, assured me that it is her regular demeanor and that she is pinching herself to make sure that she is real. Emma has so much character, with her wise demeanor and red hair, but the best and coolest surprise was that she has a tooth!!! I have heard that sometimes babies are born with teeth or get them very soon after birth, but I have never met one until now! When I met her she had one tooth in and one about to pop through. Her pediatrician told her mom & dad that she would lose those teeth and they would be replaced eventually by real baby teeth. I was so fascinated by this and joked that the tooth fairy was coming to see her VERY early! Christa + Patrick also have a very sweet fur baby named Teddy who was super enamored by his human sister, and wanted to be involved in her shoot. (Have I mentioned that I love when people include their doggies in our sessions!?) He was a total gem, and sat and looked at the camera like a good boy.
A few weeks ago, when we still had SO MANY green leaves on the trees, I met up with one of my favorite families – The Nagels. It feels like an eternity, because we had leaves, and they hadn’t really changed colors much yet, and today they’re pretty much all brown and on the ground. When Megan & I were brainstorming locations for their family session this fall, we threw out a bunch of options. We had done Crockett Park last year, and over the summer we staged an extended family session on her family’s land. We wanted some variety across her sessions, so we weren’t too big on repeating those locations, even though they are both beautiful.I asked her if there was a place nearby that had any special significance for their family, and she suggested Whitney State Forest. I had never been to this particular forest park, and was excited to check it out…even more so when she told me that it is the place where Russ proposed to her! It was so fun to wander among the gigantic trees with their two little ones, Ryland + Brinley, and even though it was cold out, they were total troopers! Here are some of my favorites from our morning
Baby Rumi is finally here! I have been working with Pragya + Kapil for several months now, from baby shower photos to maternity portraits, and finally newborn portraits! It has been so fun to watch them and their friends and family prepare for their first baby (a girl!). I was more than excited to go to their home in Great Falls, VA to meet Rumi and capture her in all of her newborn glory! She did not disappoint – she was the sweetest and calmest little newborn. Her little cord stump fell off just in time for our session, too, so I think she was ready for me! It was also fun to meet Pragya’s parents, who are here visiting their sweet new granddaughter. I ended up having so many favorites from our session and I am excited to finally share them with you today!
A few weeks ago, I drove to Falls Church, Virginia to meet brand new baby Oliver and his parents, Tory + Nick for a newborn portrait session at their home. Oliver was such a good and sweet baby, and hardly complained during our session. When he did get a tiny bit fussy, his dad had a good remedy, which worked like a charm. It seems that Oliver has a very specific taste in music, and prefers to hear the new Lil’ Wayne album. If you turn on anything else, he likes to protest, but as soon as he hears Lil’ Wayne, he is as happy and content as can be! I can already tell that he is going to be full of personality. Not just by his affinity for popular male hip hop artists, but also by how much he was flirting with me. He was SO SMILEY during his session, and I just couldn’t contain all of my obnoxious squealing behind the camera. He also has THE BEST cowlick on the front of his head, which gives him so much character. I always adore the tiniest details, and so I am going to lead off with those images now!
A few months ago, I chatted with Yancy, who is expecting her second baby girl any time now. She expressed interest in maternity and newborn portraits, and let me know that this would be her first official portrait session with her sweet family! I was so honored that she was considering me as a photographer, and when we agreed on the date and location, I couldn’t have been more excited. I met up with Yancy, Jorge, and sweet, adorable Adeline at the Manassas National Battlefield Park in Manassas, Virginia. I hadn’t actually visited the park since I was about 11 or 12 years old, but I remembered it being a very pretty park with a ton of fields and forestry. I was hoping for a dreamy and glowy golden hour on the day of our session, but rain was in the forecast and it ended up being overcast, which I can totally work with. Yancy + Jorge brought their fur baby, Milo, along with them and he was the best! Can I just say once and for all, so that it is clear, I LOVE WHEN CLIENTS INCLUDE THEIR DOGGIES IN OUR SESSIONS! If you are ever considering it, or wondering if it’ll be more trouble than its worth, just stop. Bring the dogs. We only get to have them for a little while, and they are part of your family, so they should totally be included! I will even hold onto your dog’s leash for the majority of the session so we can be sure to get some images with humans only! I might also try to take them home with me, but hey, we can’t all be perfect. Anyway, I loved having Milo there, and I especially loved hanging out with Adeline. I can tell that she is such a little sidekick to her parents, and that she is going to be the most helpful big sister in all of history. She is beyond excited to have a baby sister, and that girl can communicate to let you know what she likes and dislikes! She chatted with me the entire session, making jokes, telling me that she loves legos, and most importantly, telling me that Simon and Jeanette are the best characters on Alvin + the Chipmunks because they are the smartest and study hard. I love that she values brains over beauty at such a young age, and can tell that she is going to grow up into the best kind of person one day. Here are a few of my favorites of Miss Adeline and her cute parents!
I had a busy weekend photographing so many sweet babies and families! It all started on Saturday morning with sweet baby Vaughn. Vaughn is about 3 weeks old now, and he is the cutest and squishiest little guy. He has very blonde hair, and smiles at you with his eyes open, and was such a joy to be around. He pretty much never cried for our entire session, and it was so fun getting to hang with his parents, Corinne & Mike, and even his cute grandma as a bonus! I love when family is visiting during my sessions, and I love it even more when they agree to be in some photos! Corinne got the cutest little fox outfit for Vaughn to wear, and I honestly could not handle how cute he was with his little tail. Here are some of my favorites from our time together!
One of my favorite tiny clients turned one a few weeks ago, and I could not have been more happy to document her birthday with a cake smash session! Emma has been such a joy to photograph over the course of the last year. It was so fun to watch her grow from newborn to six months old and now a whole year! She has the best little personality. Her mom, Joanna, told me that they call her the greeter at school, because she is always waving to everyone. She definitely did her fair share of waving at the camera, but she also has the BEST expressions. She has a fishy face, a very surprised face, and can cheer with her hands in the air. I am 100% going to over-share on this post, because she is SO CUTE and I couldn’t possibly narrow it down to just a few images. Here are a billion of my favorites of Emma:
I have been waiting ten long years for this sweet baby to be born, and I almost can’t believe she is finally here! Back in 2008, a new girl started working at the small university I had been working at for about a year at that time. On Hilary’s first day of work, a group of us approached her desk to see if she wanted to have lunch with us. I was so surprised when she said yes. I think I was surprised because I am pretty shy and I think that I would have been too nervous to say yes if roles were reversed. Hilary & I instantly hit it off, and she became my permanent lunch date for the next eight years that we worked together. We still try to meet for lunch pretty often, now that we don’t work together, and I am just so happy that our friendship has stayed strong. Hilary + Aaron have been married for more than a decade now, which explains why I have been waiting TEN YEARS for her to have a baby. I had my first baby in 2011, and then another baby at the end of 2013, and gushed to her a million times about how amazing it is to have babies. Hilary became an aunt and fully embraced it, but kept saying she wasn’t quite ready for a baby yet. I admire her decision to wait until she felt settled in life. They started a business, bought land, built a house, and took care of a lot of important life stuff before jumping into parenthood. Hilary reached out to me in February to meet for lunch at our favorite sushi place, and for some reason I had a premonition that she was going to tell me she was pregnant. I was so happy to be correct! Hilary was due the day before my birthday, and I was secretly hoping that she would hold out that extra day so we could be birthday twins…she did not hold out. Taylor was born ONE HOUR before my birthday! I always knew Hilary would be the most beautiful pregnant woman (I was right – see her maternity portraits here), and more importantly that she will be an incredible mama. It was so special to watch her with Taylor, and so fun to have both grandmas here for the newborn session. I am so excited to share SO MANY of my favorite portraits from Taylor’s newborn session this morning – she was the sweetest and calmest baby (and her mom looks fantastic, considering she had a baby one week before – can you even tell!?)
