I have been waiting ten long years for this sweet baby to be born, and I almost can’t believe she is finally here! Back in 2008, a new girl started working at the small university I had been working at for about a year at that time. On Hilary’s first day of work, a group of us approached her desk to see if she wanted to have lunch with us. I was so surprised when she said yes. I think I was surprised because I am pretty shy and I think that I would have been too nervous to say yes if roles were reversed. Hilary & I instantly hit it off, and she became my permanent lunch date for the next eight years that we worked together. We still try to meet for lunch pretty often, now that we don’t work together, and I am just so happy that our friendship has stayed strong. Hilary + Aaron have been married for more than a decade now, which explains why I have been waiting TEN YEARS for her to have a baby. I had my first baby in 2011, and then another baby at the end of 2013, and gushed to her a million times about how amazing it is to have babies. Hilary became an aunt and fully embraced it, but kept saying she wasn’t quite ready for a baby yet. I admire her decision to wait until she felt settled in life. They started a business, bought land, built a house, and took care of a lot of important life stuff before jumping into parenthood. Hilary reached out to me in February to meet for lunch at our favorite sushi place, and for some reason I had a premonition that she was going to tell me she was pregnant. I was so happy to be correct! Hilary was due the day before my birthday, and I was secretly hoping that she would hold out that extra day so we could be birthday twins…she did not hold out. Taylor was born ONE HOUR before my birthday! I always knew Hilary would be the most beautiful pregnant woman (I was right – see her maternity portraits here), and more importantly that she will be an incredible mama. It was so special to watch her with Taylor, and so fun to have both grandmas here for the newborn session. I am so excited to share SO MANY of my favorite portraits from Taylor’s newborn session this morning – she was the sweetest and calmest baby (and her mom looks fantastic, considering she had a baby one week before – can you even tell!?)
On August 18th, I had the absolute pleasure of photographing Carlos + Queen’s backyard wedding ceremony! I am always nervous going into a backyard wedding, because you never know what you’re going to get in terms of portrait locations and scenery. Luckily, Carlos + Queen have a beautiful home on a beautiful piece of property in Woodbridge, Virginia. I loved spending the evening with the Hewetts and their friends and family. It was so clear to me how much everyone loves them and wishes them well on their marriage. My favorite part of the event was probably all of the toasts. Traditionally, the best man, maid of honor, and a parent may make a toast at a wedding, but at THIS wedding, there was an endless line of toasting! The best man, maid of honor, siblings, ALL parents of both the bride and groom, and close friends all took their turn with the microphone to share anecdotes and a few words about Carlos & Queen. My favorite moment was when Carlos’s son took the mic and said “I’m just so happy.” It had to make his family feel so good and right to know that their children were wishing them well and happy about their union. Here are a few of my favorites from the day!
Last weekend, I had the pleasure of meeting brand new baby Teagan and her sweet parents, Stephanie + Gunner. Stephanie + Gunner are high school sweethearts, which I always think is the sweetest story! Teagan was just about two weeks old on the day of our session, and she performed perfectly as a baby model. She slept so much and I felt like we were able to just move and position her in any way we wanted! She did wake up for a few of her portraits, and she was SO ALERT during that time. She drifted back to sleep and gave some sweet sleepy smiles, and was overall, one of the most calm babies I have ever worked with. I don’t think I heard her cry once! Here are a few of my personal favorites from her sleepy newborn session.
Pragya + Kapil are expecting a baby girl pretty much any day now! They may look familiar, since I photographed Pragya’s baby shower a couple months ago :). I love this season of life – where a couple is embarking on a brand new adventure, wanting to capture every single moment, knowing that life is never going to be the same. I remember being this way myself, though as a photographer, I think I tend to over-capture and over-share (have you seen my personal instagram account?!) all the time. But that is who I am, and being the type of person who wants to savor – and remember – every moment, I am in full support of people who want to document this season of life, because as we know so well…it goes too fast. My boys are 4 and 7 years old already, and I feel simultaneously like they were born yesterday and have been in my life forever. Time is really crazy that way! I was more than happy to try and help Pragya + Kapil remember this time in their life – excitedly awaiting their very first baby, a daughter who is sure to be just as cute as her sweet parents! We met up at Great Falls National Park in McClean, VA for a summertime session, and they were such troopers, despite the heat and humidity that day! They brought my best buddy, Max with them, and he was such a good boy! Here are a few of my favorites from our time together:
A couple weeks ago, I got to hang out with brand new baby Jack and his family. Jack was AWESOME. He was so squishy and adorable…and he weighed ELEVEN POUNDS!!! His mama, Stacy, is obviously superwoman. She was able to gestate and safely deliver an eleven pound human while chasing after Oliver, Jack’s adorable older brother. Oh…and they moved into their beautiful new home about a month before Jack was born. So yeah…superwoman! I grew two nine pounders myself, so I know what a big baby can be like…and I always love a fellow giant baby haver! The Mowry’s home was so pretty and had such an open and bright feel. There was tons of natural light coming from all directions, and it made for such pretty light for Jack’s session. I am so happy to be sharing some of my favorites with you today, and can’t wait for you to see how cute Jack and his chubby newborn cheeks are!
